Fortress of Louisbourg

Step back in time to a 1744 French Fortress where the residents are all a buzz with talk of the impending war with the English. The Fortress of Louisbourg was one of the busiest harbours in North America and one of France's key centres of trade and military strength in the New World.

The fortress is one of the largest national historic sites in North America covering 16,549 acres. The fortress is a re-creation of a town 250 years ago with walls, inns and lively taverns. Have lunch in one of the three 18th century period restaurants. Guided walking tours are available. As well as the fortress there are beaches, hiking/ski trails and fishing sites on the site. You should allow at least one full day to explore the Fortress.

Sit back and enjoy live Cape Breton entertainment in the Elizabethan-style performing arts centre. Nightly entertainment is offered from mid-June to mid-October. The Playhouse is one of the most unique entertainment venues in North America.


Lighthouse Point/Louisbourg Lighthouse

A short scenic five minute drive along the northern shore of Louisbourg Harbour will bring you to Lighhouse Point and the Louisbourg Lighthouse, commanding a scenic view across the Harbour of the Fortress of Louisbourg. On this point the French errected the first lighhouse in Canada in 1733-34. In 1820 the Colony of Nova Scotia replaced it with another lighthouse. The ruins of both lighthouses can still be seen near the current lighthouse which was itself errected in the 1920s.

Don a lighted helmet & protective clothing before you enter the dark depths of a 1932 "Room and Pillar" Cape Breton coal mine escorted by a retired miner who will show you how coal was mined by hand and hauled with pit ponies to the top, as well as tell you many stories about the mine itself.



Kennington Cove Beach

Kennington Cove is where the British in 1758 landed to capture the fortress of Louisbourg from the French. A beach park with picnic facilities are avilable here. There is also a trail which can be hiked. Along the trail you will pass rugged rocky shoreline and beaches. You will also pass a monument detailing the historic nature of the shore.
